- UUID v4 — 122 random bits, the default choice for most identifiers.
- UUID v7 — starts with a timestamp, so new IDs sort in creation order. Database indexes stay compact.
- ULID — time-ordered, 26 characters, URL-safe Crockford Base32.
- Nano ID — short, URL-friendly random IDs.
- Bulk generation and a validator that checks an ID and reports its version.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use UUID v4 or v7?
Use v7 for database primary keys: because it is time-ordered, inserts land at the end of the index instead of scattering across it. Use v4 when you don’t want an ID to reveal when it was created.
Are these UUIDs truly random?
They come from the cryptographically secure random number generator built into your browser or Windows, the same source used for encryption keys.
Can two generated UUIDs collide?
In practice, no. A v4 UUID has 122 random bits — you would need to generate billions per second for many years to have a meaningful chance of a duplicate.
